Area Spotlight on East Lothian
The Golf Coast

East Lothian is for many people, an idyllic place to spend a Sunday afternoon; dog walks on the beach, hikes up Berwick Law or even kitesurfing for the adventurous amongst us. For others, it is home; a wonderful place to raise children, enjoy retirement or work hard.
Among the more than 40 towns and villages in East Lothian, strange though it may seem the largest of these is Musselburgh. On the outskirts of Edinburgh, many of us will know Musselburgh well, having spent a day or two at the famous Musselburgh Racecourse. The town is also the finish line for the EMF Edinburgh Marathon which this year saw over 30,000 runners taking part in events over the weekend long running festival. The community spirit of the area comes to life during these events, with local families coming out of their homes to line the course, cheer on and hand sweets to the runners.
The town is also home to Musselburgh Road Cycling Club. Established more than 70 years ago, the club has produced world championship level cyclists and attracts riders from across East Lothian and Edinburgh to its ranks. The more recreational cyclists will also be at home in East Lothian as the coastal roads are mostly flat, but with a few steep climbs and plenty of quiet country lanes to enjoy.
We can’t talk about the area without mentioning golf. Muirfield Golf Club, a host for the Open, was recently ranked the fourth best golf course in the world by Golf Digest. Muirfield is not alone though; East Lothian boasts sixteen world-class golf courses and golfers the world over flock to ‘the golf coast’ each year to play a few rounds.
East Lothian is hard to beat as a place to live and with direct train links to Edinburgh, commuting is easily achievable if you are after the best of both worlds!
Fun Fact: a competition to design the official flag of East Lothian is currently underway, with the results, from 623 entries, due to be announced in November 2018!
