Neighbourhood Spotlight: Gifford, East Lothian

Since opening our East Lothian office last year, we’ve been lucky enough to spend time exploring the region. When we were instructed to bring a property in Gifford to the market this month, it seemed like a great opportunity to share some of the highlights of the area for anybody thinking of making a move to the countryside.

Just four miles South of Haddington in East Lothian, Gifford is a small conservation village which is home to a small population many of whom are part of the local farming community. The town is now largely residential but it was once the home of a thriving paper industry. In fact, Gifford was at one time the site of a paper mill providing the banknotes for the Bank of Scotland

Like the church, the village school is named for the local parish, Yester Primary School. The school’s catchment area extends far and wide and encompasses around 180 children from the surrounding villages and farms. Given the rural community, the school plays an important part of the community for youngsters, acting as the primary meeting place and social hub for many pupils.

It wouldn’t be East Lothian without golf and the village has two courses. Gifford Golf Club to the west and Castle Park Golf Club to the south. The latter’s future has been in doubt in the past after being put up for sale in 2015 but was saved by the community who valued the provision of leisure and jobs in the local area.

Residents of Gifford enjoy a good mix of cafes and restaurants ranging from Lanterne Rouge which offers brunch and lunch in a casual setting to Goblin Ha’, a country hotel which serves up traditional pub food to locals and visitors alike.

Byfield is a charming three-bed terraced family home on the High Street in Gifford which we have just brought to the market. The property benefits from on-street parking and a large rear garden. A fire gives a cosy feel to the living rooms whilst the conservatory enjoys a log burning stove. Find out more about this property or request a viewing here.
