The Grange Property

Like many parts of Edinburgh, The Grange is an area steeped in history. Previously known as St. Giles’ Grange, the land was owned and farmed through the 14th Century by the monks of St. Giles Cathedral, the High Kirk of Edinburgh, which is situated on the Royal Mile.

The development of this early suburb began in the 1860’s on the land of the then privately owned Grange Estate. Large Victorian mansion houses characterise the area, which lies between Morningside to the west and Newington to the east, and today The Grange is one of Edinburgh’s most desirable neighbourhoods.

Located around 1.5 miles south of the city centre, The Grange Edinburgh incorporates quiet residential streets, a few independent shops and eateries, along with highly respected schools. To the north, the nearby expansive park known as The Meadows is enjoyed by families, dog walkers, sports players and students alike, and is a welcome outdoor retreat from the busy streets of the city centre.

Although amenities are limited in The Grange itself, the area is well served by adjoining Morningside and Newington, where shoppers have their pick of supermarkets, bars, restaurants and shops.

Many of the large houses in The Grange still remain unchanged as vast private residences. However, an equal number have since been developed and divided into flats or smaller dwellings. The architecture in the area has changed even further in recent years, with the addition of modern apartment buildings, creating a mixture of new and old so familiar in many parts of the city these days.

Even so, a walk along the quiet, tree-lined streets of The Grange, you cannot escape the feeling of historical grandeur that still exists in its modern form.

For families, the neighbourhood is blessed with well-respected schools and nurseries. The local Sciennes Primary School sits at the northern boundary of the area, with James Gillespie’s High School and George Watson’s College beyond its western edge. There is also a strong community association that has been running for many years, upholding the resident’s best interests, in what has been declared a conservation area.

Although perhaps more greatly associated with the area of Morningside, author J.K. Rowling has also resided in The Grange, as did a former (subsequently disgraced) RBS Chief Executive, who shall remain nameless. This highlights the high regard in which The Grange is held, and perhaps also indicates the level of house prices in the area.
