Why choose East Lothian?
Well, I may be biased having been brought up in East Lothian but I believe it is one of the best places to live, not only in Scotland but the UK too! It offers a paradise away from city life, less than an hour’s drive from Edinburgh, and boasts some stunning scenery on the coast. It offers the best of both worlds for commuters, retirees and families alike.
My top five favourite things about life in East Lothian:
Beautiful beaches and scenery– I love spending my weekends walking Nala, our Pomeranian along the many beautiful beaches in East Lothian. One of my favourites is the hidden gem that’s Seacliff beach, which boasts a beautiful shoreline. West Bay in North Berwick, which is just minutes from my family home, offers long stretches of sand for Nala to enjoy and has excellent views of the famous Bass Rock – rated as the third best cliff dive in Britain.
The array of independent and award-winning restaurants and cafes – For real foodies, I’d recommend Osteria in North Berwick, with its high-end Italian menu and intimate setting – it’s the perfect spot for any special occasion. For a daytime treat, try Greywalls Hotel in Gullane, it is renowned for its tasty afternoon teas, delicious sandwiches and sweet treats plus boasts stunning views over East Lothian and the Firth of Forth. If you prefer to eat outdoors, you’ve got to try The Lobster Shack, which sits on North Berwick’s harbour. The Shack offers lovely views and unbeatable fresh lobster and chips, great for a summer’s evening down on the rocks.
Varied outdoor activities and pursuits – East Lothian is quite literally booming with outdoor activities. For the thrill seekers, Fox Lake, Scotland’s first Wakepark, offers aerial rope courses and wakeboarding for all ages. There’s also exhilarating zip lines and a fantastic family-run café. My favourite childhood hobby was horse-riding, Seacliff stables, which is where I learnt to ride, offers various lessons, treks and hacks for all abilities. There’s truly nothing better than going out riding in East Lothian, the scenery is incredible.
Exceptional lifestyle & recreational opportunities – Fletchers Cottage Spa at Archerfield Estate offers the perfect weekend retreat for those with busy lives looking for a spa break or those simply looking to book in for a relaxing midweek massage. The Spa boasts peaceful views across the magnificent Archerfield estate and an extensive range of treatments, which can be enjoyed with a glass of bubbly. For the golf pro, North Berwick Golf Club is a must with its spectacular course and coastal views. It’s also the thirteenth oldest golf course in the world.
Family life – East Lothian really is a brilliant location to bring up your family as there’s so much on offer for all ages. There are excellent schools to choose from as well as recreational and sports activities aplenty. East Links Family Park is a particular favourite of mine especially when I’m looking after my niece and nephew for the day, they love racing down the 7-metre four-lane slide! For rainy days, Dunbar leisure pool has superb facilities with its jacuzzi section, wave machine, water jets and flume.
The nearby and well-renowned Haddington’s Farmer’s market is also not to be missed and takes place the last Saturday of every month. You’ll find a fantastic selection of local produce for all the family here.
